Superintendent Search

Overview

With Superintendent David Hornak’s planned retirement in December 2026, Holt Public Schools has partnered with Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB) to lead a comprehensive, community-focused search for the district’s next Superintendent. MASB brings decades of leadership development and executive search experience and a proven search process designed to identify exceptional executive leaders aligned with the district’s values, strengths, and future priorities. The process emphasizes thoughtful planning, broad community engagement, and transparent candidate evaluation to ensure meaningful stakeholder involvement throughout.

Search Process

Holt Public Schools is partnering with Michigan Associate of School Boards (MASB) to conduct a structured, multi-stage Superintendent search designed to be transparent, thorough, and responsive to district needs.

The Planning and Preparation Stage begins with collaborative meetings between the Board and MASB to establish timelines, expectations, and planning parameters. Learning Community Partner input is gathered from staff, families, and community members through surveys and input sessions, leading to the development of a formal candidate profile. This stage also includes the creation of a finalized position posting.

During the Implementation Stage, MASB leads a comprehensive recruitment effort, including state and national advertising, press releases, and targeted outreach to prospective candidates. Applications are reviewed, references and background research are conducted, and qualified candidates are identified for Board consideration. MASB provides a Board workshop to support interview preparation and facilitates the interview process, including the Board reviewing the Learning Community Input session feedback.

The Final Stage focuses on selecting and appointing the next Superintendent, including contract negotiations. Following the appointment, MASB supports a successful transition through professional mentoring and governance workshops during the Superintendent’s first year to promote strong leadership and alignment with district goals.
