Even though meals are of no charge, Holt Public still needs families to complete the “Education Benefits Form (EBF),” formerly known as the Free & Reduced Lunch Application.

Completing this form allows for a number of reasons:

Add your family to the Summer P-EBT Card Payments
Provides Title funding for our buildings for support & learning
Helps our District apply for grants and other funding streams
Provide other State programs for our students
Reduction in some school participation fee's

MealMagic Family Portal: Changes to Low-Balance Reminder Email Options

Parents/guardians can choose to receive low-balance email notifications. If a parent/guardian previously opted out of all email, they will need to uncheck that box to access the low-balance email settings. When a student's balance is at or below the amount the parent/guardian selected, an email will be sent. Parents/guardians will only receive one request every three days for a given student. Low-balance email is handled per Family Portal account. If multiple people have access to a student, each person can choose their own low-balance email option.

The opt-in procedure is simple.

Federal Lunch Program Changes

For the past two years, a federal lunch program provided all students with free meals, but this ended at the end of our last school year. Families will be expected to pay for school breakfast and lunch. Those eligible for free and reduced lunch must fill out and submit the Free & Reduced Lunch Application. Capital Area District Library Student Success Initiative

Capital Area District Libraries is continuing its partnership with Holt Public Schools on a project, the Student Success Initiative. It’s a way to help students easily access all the education and entertainment options available at CADL’s 13 branches, Mobile Library, and online collections. This card is free to all Holt Public students no matter where they live, even those who already have a regular CADL card. Having a Student Success account requires release of directory information to CADL in order to create the account. Holt Athletics ~ Out of an abundance of caution for the health and safety of our student athletes, staff, and learning community and due to the COVID-19 pandemic, effective August 15, 2020, Holt Public will be postponing specific junior high and high school sports in favor of a potential shortened spring season. The specific sports include at the high school level: football, swimming/diving, soccer, and volleyball as well as football and volleyball at the junior high. Athletes currently participating in football, swimming/diving, soccer, and volleyball may elect to participate in one of the sports continuing this fall. At this point, the following sports are permitted to continue at the high school: girls and boys cross country, boys tennis, sideline cheer (no stunts) and girls golf and girls and boys cross country at the junior high.

Monthly Memo from Holt Public Schools – May 2020

Dear Holt Public Class of 2020,

It is with a heavy heart and tremendous optimism that I write this letter. First, I would like to thank you for all of your thoughtful tweets, Facebook posts, and Instagram messages about how dangerous and unsafe the road conditions were each day from October to March in mid-Michigan. With only one official snow day called, I never dreamed that you would be finishing your high school career this way.

Find the Good ~ For most of us, social distancing was a relatively new term. For all of us, social distancing is now something we are extremely familiar with and it is my hope everyone is doing their best to honor social distancing protocols. As I reflect on the past couple of weeks, things changed so quickly. Holt Public attempted to communicate accurate information with our families and staff as often as possible. In the end, we had one day to systematically close our schools for an extended period of time to help reduce the spread of the Coronavirus.

Snow Days

Snow Days ~ Annually, the State of Michigan offers up to six days of grace for inclement weather, extreme illness, and or mechanical failure days. In other words, our schools can be off six times each year when scheduled to be in session. When school districts exceed the six days, district leaders can appeal for up to three additional days. The additional three days off are rarely needed, but serve as an added safety guard. During the 2018-2019 school year, we were required to cancel school 11 times for inclement weather. You may recall we dealt with the Polar Vortex last year. A year ago, most school districts exceeded the maximum limit of inclement weather days, and the Governor signed a bill forgiving the three days when Michigan was placed into a State of Emergency. In the end, by adding the additional three State of Emergency days, last school year, school districts had 12-days available to use if needed. With that, several school districts in Michigan were required to be off over 20-days. Once a District cancelled more than 12-days last year, the District was required to add days to the school calendar or forfeit school funding. While Holt Public was not required to add days to the academic calendar last year due to the additional forgiven days, many school districts did.

Civility & Social Media ~ Three years ago, I published the breadth of this memo on civility. Over the course of the last 1100 days, I have read countless social media posts criticizing school employees, teachers, and administrators. Dictionary.com defines civility as “courtesy, politeness, and or polite action and expression.” Though we may have differing opinions, a level of civility, mutual regard and support for one another will lead us to shared objectives. My concern today is specific to social media etiquette and the overall use of social media to share concerns about a school employee or the school district as a whole.

Old Education Center Demo

November 2019~ In 1967, Holt Public Schools built an office building to serve as the

Education Center for Central Office officials and the Board of Education to call home on Spahr Avenue. In 2003, the Board of Education and Central Office officials were relocated to what is now called the North Campus in an effort to consolidate operations. During that period, Holt Public offered alternative education programs that were located in a building on Cedar Street, which was leased by the District at a cost of $100,000 annually. Consequently, when the original Spahr Avenue property became vacant, our alternative education programs moved in. In 2017, our alternative programming moved into the North Campus thus vacating the Spahr Avenue building, which offered more options for all students at Holt Public schools. Over the years, Holt Public has attempted to lease and sell the building. The building has had many issues over the years including several floods, a leaky roof, and numerous electrical and plumbing issues. Finding a tenant or new owners has been challenging. As a result, since 2017, the building has been vacant.

Leadership Changes at HPS

October 2019 ~ The principal of Hope Middle School, Mrs. Jennifer Goodman was recently promoted to serve as the superintendent of Mar Lee School District in Calhoun County. Mrs. Goodman served as the Hope principal for the past ten years. In addition to serving as the principal, she has been working on completing her doctorate in educational leadership and she has been preparing for a leadership opportunity. Our learning community would like to wish her well and thank her for her ongoing leadership and service over the past ten years! “Mrs. Goodman is ready for this opportunity! She has been studying to become a superintendent for the past four years. She is a strong instructional leader,” said Holt Public Superintendent, Dr. David G. Hornak.
