- Use mistakes as learning opportunities
- The establishment, teaching, and monitoring of equitable, school-wide behavior expectations that provide consistency

- Acknowledge/Encourage expected behavior
- Increased sense of well-being, autonomy, and personal accountability among our students
- Students learn to think responsibly, a critical life skill
- Increased student achievement
- Improved school climate
- Decreased discipline referrals, and classroom/office disruptions
- Build strong relationships between staff and students
- Decreased bullying, fighting, and violence
- Use data to problem solve
- Correct inappropriate behavior
Positive Behavior Support
Sycamore Elementary implements a school-wide system with a common set of rules and expectations for a variety of settings within the school. This system, based on Positive Behavior Supports (PBS), is called Catch Them Shining. Expectations are taught explicitly with specially designed lesson plans specific to each area (hallway, cafeteria, bathroom, playground) that show what behaviors look like and what they don’t look like. These behaviors are reinforced and students are recognized for their appropriate behaviors. Decision-making in regards to further instruction and/or reinforcement of behaviors will be based data collection.
The goal of PBS is to improve student performance and increase teacher instructional time by providing explicit and consistent instructions on appropriate behavior.
Three school-wide behavioral expectations have been identified for all areas of our school and are:
- Be Safe
- Be Responsible
- Be Respectful
Students are explicitly taught these expectations and are recognized for exhibiting these positive behaviors. The expected behaviors for each area of the building are found in the matrix.
We welcome parent feedback regarding our implementation of PBS.
