Seniors should have their college applications submitted by this time and be actively pursuing financial aid. Most financial aid will come through college financial aid offices. Students need to develop a relationship with the financial aid office of each college to which they are applying. FAFSA applications are found on-line, www.fafsa.ed.gov, and will be available to students early in December. The first step to establish a PIN (personal Identification number), complete the application and submit before the March 1st deadline.

Sources of financial aid are scholarships, grants, loans, and work study programs. Internet websites are excellent sources. Addresses and web information are available in the counseling office. Also, there are several local scholarships that are only available to Holt students. Local scholarship application will be available in the counseling office in February. Other sources for scholarship include: parents' place of employment, churches, and community organizations.

Beware of scholarship scams. Some indications of possible scams are: application or other fees, guaranteed winnings, "everybody is eligible", unsolicited opportunities, no telephone number, a mail drop for a return address, operating out of a residence, unusual request for personal information, notification by phone, high success rates, and excessive hype.
